Nestled in the northernmost part of the UAE, Ras al-Khaimah, often simply called RAK, has begun to rival Dubai in its appeal. This emirate boasts a versatile landscape of majestic mountains, sprawling red sand deserts, and luxurious white sand beaches and lagoons. Fusing the old with the new of Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah tourism showcases Arabic culture through its monuments and old abandoned villages. The holiday pampers tourists with desert camps, golfing, water sports and cruises, sandboarding, mountain walks, relaxing spas, falconry and much more.
Less than an hour away from the hustle and bustle of Dubai airport, RAK enjoys sunny weather throughout the year. The temperature in Ras Al Khaimah is best between the months of October and April. There is no shortage of things to do in this sanctuary of sorts.
Iceland Water Park
The first thing you will notice in this fun-filled entertainment destination are penguins, lots of them! These black and white statues act as spectators to your water escapades. You can enjoy the largest man-made waterfall here, called Penguin Falls. If you are an adrenaline junkie and like to hear your heart race, do not miss Mount Attack, the sheer vertical fall, the Mount Cyclone and the Mount Tempest. If you like your water activities on the mellow side, try out Kids Cove, Polar Bay, Eddy Pond, and Snow River. For tourists who want an affordable yet fulfilling water-sport experience, several Iceland Water Park deals are available.
Dhayah Fort
Built during the 16th century on a hill that faces the Persian Gulf, Dhayah Fort is a spot you will love to photograph during sunsets and show off to your friends. It is an edifice made of mud-brick and is historically significant as it was used as a military tower in the war between the British and the natives. From here, you can also enjoy the panoramic view of the ruins of other forts on the south.
Jabal Jais Mountain
Whether you are adventure-loving or the laid-back type who loves to take in the beautiful scenery, Jabal Jais mountain can fulfil your needs. With a height of 1910m, it is the tallest mountain in the UAE and is part of the Ras al Khaimah mountains of Hajar. You will have a wonderful driving experience owing to the smooth, snaking roads leading up this mountain. Out of all the things to do in Ras Al Khaimah, this is great for the outdoorsy travellers.
Jazirat Al Hamra Fishing Village
Another historical hotspot to visit during your Ras Al Khaimah tourism is the ghostly town of Jazirat al Hamra. It is one of the abandoned villages of the past, whose people had lived on fishing and pearling. Since visitors are not allowed inside, you can peep through the fence at what is left of wind towers and mosques, old houses, and coral houses.
Other places to visit in Ras Al Khaimah include the National Museum situated in the RAK capital, and the Ras Al Khaimah Mall, to ice skate or to pamper yourself with the latest apparel. No wonder RAK is being called ‘the rising emirate’.
